Led by our brilliant volunteer Maria, the group meets every other Thursday for a relaxed, friendly stroll. We usually start and end outside Kyra on St Saviourgate, with a gentle route planned through York’s city centre and green spaces—often ending with a well-earned cuppa at a cosy café.

Accessible Walks for All Abilities

No two walks are exactly the same. Routes vary in length and intensity, and we always aim to ensure they’re accessible for everyone—including members with mobility difficulties. Whether you want a short walk with plenty of rest stops or feel up for something longer, there’s a place for you.

The focus is never on speed. It’s about moving your body, clearing your mind, and enjoying supportive company.

Why Walking Helps

Walking is one of the simplest and most effective ways to support both mental and physical wellbeing. Regular walks can reduce stress, boost your mood, and improve heart health—and when you’re walking with others, there’s the added benefit of connection and community.

Being outdoors, especially in green or historic surroundings like those we’re lucky to have in York, can also have a calming effect. Plus, for those who find sitting face-to-face conversations difficult, side-by-side chatting while walking can make opening up feel a little easier.

Special Walks, Shared Purpose

Alongside our regular walks, we’ve also taken part in special themed walks that bring deeper meaning to the experience:

  • Dark Skies Festival Walk
An evening trip to Cawthorn Roman Camp where we walked under a protected sky and had the chance to gaze at the stars.
  • 1 in 4 Walk
An interactive night walk through York to raise awareness for domestic abuse survivors, combining storytelling, performance, and community reflection.

These moments remind us that walking can be much more than just exercise—it can be grounding, powerful, and even magical.
