We’re always on the lookout for new ways to help women feel strong, connected, and uplifted—so we’re really excited to introduce something a little different this November: Capoeira!
Led by the brilliant Emily Lapworth, these taster sessions will give Kyra members a chance to explore Capoeira, a unique Brazilian martial art that blends dance, movement, music, and play. You don’t need to have any experience (or consider yourself “sporty”)—just come as you are and give it a go.
What Is Capoeira, Anyway?
Capoeira has its roots in Afro-Brazilian history, developed by enslaved Africans in Brazil as both a form of resistance and a way to express freedom through movement. It combines powerful martial arts sequences with flowing dance-like movements, traditional music, and call-and-response singing. It’s all about rhythm, connection, and joyful movement.
While it looks impressive, it’s also incredibly adaptable, making it perfect for people of all abilities to try at their own pace.
Why It’s Great for Your Body and Mind
Capoeira isn’t just physical exercise (though it will help build strength, flexibility, and coordination), it’s also deeply nourishing for your mental and emotional wellbeing. It encourages self-expression, boosts confidence, and brings people together in a really joyful, energising way.
There’s a strong sense of community within Capoeira too, which fits beautifully with what we try to offer here at Kyra: connection, belonging, and the freedom to try something new in a safe, supportive space.
Support Kyra and Help Us Keep Moving
At Kyra, we’re proud to offer activities that nurture the whole person, from creative workshops and mental health support to energising new sessions like Capoeira. But we can only do this with your support.
You can donate to Kyra here, or fundraise for us in your own way—we’d love to hear your ideas.
